One of my biggest regrets is not seeking for professional treatment sooner. 95% of my skin was covered in psoriasis patches before I finally decided to get help. I don’t know why I waited so long, but it took me five years of living with psoriasis to gather the courage to visit a skin specialist.
The inflammation was all over my body and my original skin colour could hardly be seen. I had psoriasis patches all over my scalp and had to shave my head for a year. The patches on my scalp were too painful, and it was difficult for me to wear my hijab comfortably.
Before all that, I was in denial of my condition. I couldn’t accept that I have psoriasis. It wasn't easy for me to deal with the truth, even though I noticed early symptoms in 2012, when I was five months into my first pregnancy.
I first noticed a small circle of inflamed skin around my belly button. I consulted my obstetrician about the issue and was told that the inflammation was caused by hormonal issues. The doctor said it would clear up once I gave birth and I just went along with it. I didn’t take any medication or apply any creams to reduce the inflammation, and my condition got worse in time.
I started developing red and inflamed lesions on other parts of my body, which got worse during my second pregnancy in 2014. My inverse psoriasis was so severe that it prevented me from leaving the house and playing sports. The skin lesions were too painful, especially in Malaysia’s hot and humid climate.

My self-esteem was badly affected as well, as psoriasis drew unwelcome stares and questions from others. I even had to switch jobs four years ago, because I couldn’t bear with the way people treated me at my old job.
I spent a fortune on alternative medicines and supplements, as I was desperate to find a cure. However, all the herbal and snake oil products didn’t help at all. It actually made my psoriasis worse. Based on my experiences, I strongly advise others to consult a specialist rather than relying on supplements that make empty promises.
At first, I took steroids to control my condition. But in 2018, I started taking biologic injections regularly, which are more accessible in Malaysia in the recent years. I saw a difference in the texture and colour of my skin within the first week of my treatment, where the plaque and redness reduced drastically. I continued with the treatment and now, my psoriasis condition is close to 95% clear.
I’m physically healthier and I’m currently working in a company that is very understanding of my condition. Living with psoriasis made me realise that I’m able to be strong and resilient. It has taught me to accept and love myself, despite any flaws that I might have. Although there’s no cure for psoriasis, I’m able to manage and control it with the right treatments, just like how I’m in control of my own life.
