My name is Thaneswari Rajenthiran. I am a lead dance instructor at Daynight Studio and the founder of Cine Dance Class. I was diagnosed with psoriasis at the age of 14. It started with some scales on my scalp and some kind of ringworm on my femur. At the time, I did not know it was psoriasis. I was very worried, and all I could do was hide it by wearing comfortable clothes. In no time, it spread all over my body, and I decided to inform my mother, who immediately took me to a doctor.
When the doctor at a clinic first told me what I had was called psoriasis, he briefly explained the skin condition to my family members. My parents were very distressed. They were desperate and felt hopeless because they knew there was no cure or medication for this skin condition. Therefore, the doctor advised my parents to seek advice from a renowned skin specialist in India.
My family and I then flew to India. They did not hesitate because it was a small hope that this could be a cure. I was there for two months to get treated. My very first option was a 15-day steroid shot. I thought this would help me deal with my pain, but unfortunately, it turned out to be a nightmare. After a few days, I was very unwell, and my skin started flaking, and I started losing some hair on my scalp. Then I went to Tirupati (India) to shave my head. It was not pleasant as I was bleeding, and I had problems with the person that shaved my head who was disgusted with me and thought what I had was contagious.
When the treatments in India did not work, I went to see a dermatologist in Malaysia who prescribed me with the medication that I am now on and that has been the only thing that has worked since.
As a dancer, I sweat a lot. It's a lot harder than I imagined it would be. One of my only routines is to put on a cream prescribed by a dermatologist before and after class because that's the only thing that helps me. Despite all this, I teach my students with all the energy I have in the classroom.
From sleepless nights to countless dry patches of skin in bed, I have always fought my own battle. I am still told to cover my body because the scars do not look good. As a result, I still get randomly asked about my scars by many strangers, and it gets worse when they advise me to take products and medications that I do not seem to know about. But they do not know my condition, only I know what is right for my body. This is why its so important to see a dermatologist for the right treatment.
I am here to spread love and positivity to all fighting their battles. Now I finally understand that psoriasis is a part of me, but I believe there is always a light at the end of the tunnel, and the challenges have made me a better person.
