I was diagnosed with psoriasis. When my symptoms first started on my elbows and scalp, I thought it was just a mild rash or some dry skin and dandruff at first. I also thought it was a combination of dehydration and too much heaty food. I started using moisturizer and anti-dandruff shampoo for a few weeks, but nothing worked. It was then that I decided to go to my doctor. There I found out that I had psoriasis.
However, I did not know what it was. I then started doing my research, and the more I found out about it, the more distressed and upset I became. Having discovered that it was incurable and required lifelong management was heartbreaking to me. It got even worse for me when I found out about the different progressions like psoriatic arthritis, its comorbidities, and how patients have a lower life expectancy.
I even tried alternative therapies like taking freeze-dried olive oil tablets, pH water, and salt rooms. Nothing worked and my condition got worse. It became pretty bad.
At its worst, my psoriasis affected my confidence and my choice of clothing. I got upset whenever my friends and colleagues ask me about my condition in a rude and untactful manner, which hurt my feelings.
The only thing which finally worked was a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise, eating healthily, and moisturizing my skin along with treatment. It has kept my psoriasis under control. There are times when I experience flare-ups like a small spot or flaking on my skin, but it has not been too bad. When that happens, I will tighten up my diet and treat the affected area until it gets better.
Looking back at my journey, my advice is to start making your health a priority. It’s important to pay attention to your body and ensure your chosen healthcare professional is kept in the loop so any progressions or worsening symptoms can be addressed as soon as possible.
