By the time I turned 16, my psoriasis had covered my entire body. It was one of the hardest years of my psoriasis journey. My entire forehead was covered in patches. Whenever I went out, people used to ask me what was wrong with my face. I felt so embarrassed and down. I would tell them that there is nothing wrong with me and I have a skin condition called psoriasis. I started having anxiety attacks at the thought of going out and was even afraid to step out of the house. This has even affected me till today. I am often reluctant or afraid to do something out of my comfort zone or interact with others. To me, the worst part of psoriasis is that there is no cure and knowing that I have to live with this condition my whole life.
When my symptoms started, it took me one year after my first doctor’s appointment to visit a dermatologist in Kuantan. It was only then that I got an accurate diagnosis of psoriasis and was prescribed medication that worked and helped me manage my condition. Looking back at it now, I realise that I didn’t fully grasp the significance of my condition when I was young. I was so worried about my future, and it has caused me a lot of stress because I didn’t know how I was going to live my whole life with this condition.
Fortunately, my psoriasis is now under control thanks to my dermatologist and the support from my parents. They have always consoled me when I was upset. They made sure I took my medications and ate properly. They also always had a positive outlook, which helped me get through the tough times. Throughout my journey, my flare-ups come and go, but I try to manage them as best as I can.
I am so incredibly grateful that I had a specialist who helped me tremendously, especially after being misdiagnosed for a year. Seeing a dermatologist or a specialist is really important because they are able to give you an accurate diagnosis and the proper treatment. I also highly encourage fellow psoriasis fighters or even those who suspect that they might have psoriasis to visit a dermatologist as soon as possible.
