Stats About Psoriasis

  • Psoriasis can occur at any age, but most people start to develop psoriasis during adulthood. On average, the onset of psoriasis is between 15 and 30 years of age. By age 40, people who could get psoriasis, have a 75% chance of being diagnosed with the disease. Furthermore, a second peak period of diagnosis can happen between 50 to 60 years of age.
  • The chances of developing psoriasis is increased when a family member has the disease. Alternately, people with a family history of the condition may not ever develop the condition.
  • Roughly up to 30% of psoriasis patients will be diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis. Other serious health issues that could develop from psoriasis are also kidney disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and depression.
  • Across the globe, an estimated 125 million people are diagnosed with psoriasis, which is equivalent to just 2% - 3% of the world’s population.
  • Psoriasis is not a contagious disease and cannot be transmitted to others through the touching of skin or open wounds. Therefore, psoriasis poses no risk to the health and safety of other people.
  • Usually normal skin cells will mature and fall off after every 30 days; however, with psoriasis, skin will mature and move to the surface every 3-4 days. Instead of skin cells shedding, they pile up and form lesions and become very red due to increased blood flow.
