1. Stress

One of the major psoriasis causes is stress, and everyone has unique reasons for stressing out!1 But across the board, we share the same biological response to stress: adrenaline floods the system, strains the circulatory (and immune) system, and raises blood pressure. If you have psoriasis, stress exacerbates your symptoms and your skin flares up.

Learn to defeat your stress by re-centering in the moment and calming down. Try the 4-7-8 breathing technique.2 Take a relaxing salt bath to soothing music and scented candles. Call up a friend to talk it out over ice cream, or watch your favourite movie. If all else fails, get an adult colouring book and start colouring your stress away!

2. Alcohol

A hangover the morning after a big night is the least of your worries. You could really regret your decision to drink when, a few days later, patches of psoriasis lesion appears.

Frequent imbibing may trigger psoriasis flare-ups.3 Moreover, mixing psoriasis medications with alcohol can lead to dangerous side effects.

So put down your drink and give up your happy hour sessions. Instead, go for a walk or a run before the sun goes down. It’s a win-win situation because the sun’s UV rays may help alleviate your psoriasis symptoms.

3. Sleep Deprivation

When you scratch every itch in the middle of the night, you lose the battle to psoriasis. Did you know, lack of sleep or restless sleep aggravates psoriasis symptoms? 4

Improve your sleeping habits by avoiding caffeine, excessive alcohol, nicotine, and other substances that keep you wired. Exercise is a good way to combat insomnia, and to keep you fit too.

4. Skin Injury

Living with psoriasis means your skin is extra sensitive to contact with external elements. Any minor trauma to your skin sets off what’s known as the Koebner phenomenon5 (an event that can trigger new areas of psoriasis). Other psoriasis triggers like bug bites, mosquito bites, sunburn, bruises, or even an accidental bump can encourage a flare-up. Avoid injuring your skin and keep it hydrated at all time.

Be vigilant. Refrain from scratching an itch, wear breathable long-sleeve shirts and long pants, shave with utmost care, and spray on mosquito repellent with 10% or less DEET (an active ingredient used in many insect repellents).
